Intervention Plan for Client Ashley
Background
PSY FPX 8841 Assessment 1 The following is an intervention plan crafted particularly to suit the needs of Ashley, a 19-year-old Caucasian female college student-athlete, who was referred to our services for focus training. Ashley is a member of the cross country/track team and has been having concentration, anxiety, and performance difficulties in her academic and athletic settings since her transition from high school to college. She specifically reports feeling overwhelmed by the academic coursework, social obligations, and expectations placed on her for athletic performance.
Analysis
Ashley’s core problems are anxiety and stress management for the purpose of enhanced sporting performance. Depression is not currently a problem, but her raised levels of anxiety have the risk of escalating into further psychological distress if left untreated. In light of her history of high performance and that of her mother’s anxiety, it’s imperative to intervene in order to prevent further deterioration in her sporting performance and overall welfare.
Trust Building Phase
• Ashley will receive ongoing support from her team management and coach with clear roles and expectations.
• Integration of our services into Ashley’s regular training routine will be done to establish a routine, with pre-training or post-training sessions for anxiety management and enhanced performance.
Observation
• Field observation will provide us with valuable information regarding Ashley’s interactions and behavior during practice sessions.
Needs Assessment
• PSY FPX 8841 Assessment 1 Ashley and her coach will be met regularly to gain a level of understanding about her performance problems at a more profound level and to help suitably align interventions while maintaining boundaries of confidentiality.
Assessment Instrument
• The application of the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2 (CSAI-2) will help assess Ashley’s cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety, and self-confidence levels in a proper manner.
Interventions
•Focus: Ashley will be encouraged to have realistic social expectations in order to balance academic and athletic goals without feeling overwhelmed.
• Confidence: Positive self-talk skills will be used to build Ashley’s confidence and eliminate self-blocks from affecting performance.
• Performance Anxiety: Ashley will learn coping skills to manage performance anxiety, employing self-talk and visualization skills to approach races and meets with a positive attitude.
Referral
• If specialized skills are required, Ashley can be referred to a sports psychologist for further assistance with clinical issues.
Termination of Services
• Termination of service will be determined by Ashley’s improvement and the level of continued need, with provision made to modify according to her shifting needs.
