Examining the Optimal Learning Environment and Case Study
PSY FPX 6110 Assessment 4 When receiving a considerable inheritance, the need to work evaporates, but my desire for knowledge and helping other people find their inner strength still lingers. While I dream of exploring the world, I am dedicated to pursuing further study online with the goal of being an addictionologist. By rule, addictionologists are doctors who receive further training, supervision, and certification by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). But my dream is to be the first psychologist to achieve this title or form a new association for psychologists.
While the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) offers certification for addiction professionals who are not physicians through the National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals (NCCAP), it does not command the acceptance of ASAM. Even though I have been certified by the California Association of Alcohol and Drug Educators (CAADE) since 1997, overseen by the Addiction Counseling Certification Board of California (ACCBC), I will challenge ASAM to accept psychologists working within the field.
PSY FPX 6110 Assessment 4 Individualized Learning
Therefore, my global traveling accompanied by online learning will lead the way to achieving my aim of promoting transformative changes in the life of individuals through numerous modes of therapeutic interventions, among them being small group exercises and workshops that integrate observation and active engagement.
Addiction comes in a variety of non-substance-based forms, such as food, shopping, gambling, internet, gaming, solitude, love, sex, and work. Thus, a wide range of individuals can gain from learning about addiction and changing their behaviors, emotions, and thought patterns (Srinivasan et al., 2021; Zilberman et al., 2019). Subsequently, increased education, specifically via online adult learning websites, will provide platforms for such change.
Knowles’s Andragogy Learning Theory
PSY FPX 6110 Assessment 4 Knowles’s andragogy offers a theory that matches my learning aspirations. Even though Alexander Kapp originated the theory back in 1833, andragogy took center stage only when Malcolm Shepherd Knowles worked on expanding the theory during the 1970s (Loeng, 2018; Peltz & Clemons, 2019). Knowles identified six principles of andragogy, emphasizing the self-directed nature of adult learners who are motivated by personal experiences and possess a desire for autonomy and relevance in their learning (Loeng, 2018).
Many studies confirm the effectiveness of andragogy in adult learning, especially in online learning, where it promotes self-directed learning and participation (Suzanne, 2019; Cata et al., 2020; Russell, 2021). Adopting andragogy not only supports my career experience but also allows me to pursue my education alongside other responsibilities
Knowles’s Andragogy and Addictionology
As an experienced addiction counselor pursuing additional education, andragogy appeals to my style of learning and life situation. As opposed to conventional campus-based programs, andragogy provides the adaptability required for someone like me, juggling professional and academic life (Capella University, n.d.-b). Furthermore, it harmonizes with the changing environment of addiction research, which frequently struggles with issues related to funding and biases (Monroe & Stansbury, 2009; Kepes & McDaniel, 2013; Fickweiler et al., 2017). By adopting andragogy, I seek to make a positive impact on addiction research and practice, using online platforms to maximize accessibility and impact.
A Case Study
Take Mike, a 28-year-old who has just served a prison term for drug trafficking. Despite being confronted with numerous challenges, including family expectations and substance misuse problems, Mike wants to turn his life around through education and recovery. His experience is an example of the life-changing potential of online learning and support programs like 12-step programs and addiction counseling. Through the use of the principles of andragogy, Mike is able to achieve his educational and recovery objectives in a flexible and self-paced way (Capella University, n.d.-a).
Bandura’s Social Learning and Addiction/Recovery
Bandura’s social learning theory provides additional explanations for addiction and recovery dynamics. Focusing on observational learning and self-efficacy, the theory highlights the critical roles played by positive models and environments in facilitating behavioral change (Ferrari et al., 2010; Tsang et al., 2012). In conjunction with andragogy, Bandura’s approach can be used to design personalized interventions that engage people such as Mike to transcend addiction and ensure long-term recovery.
Conclusion
In summary, the convergence of Knowles’s andragogy and Bandura’s social learning theory has the potential to meet addiction-related needs. As I continue to advance my educational and professional goals, andragogy offers a solid foundation for autonomous learning and development. Likewise, individuals such as Mike can take advantage of web-based resources and support networks to undertake life-changing recovery and self-improvement processes. In a world after COVID-19, e-learning becomes a critical instrument to increase access to learning and generate positive change for individuals and society.
