The History of Nursing Education

Nursing staff always at the front end of providing first aid to the patient plays a fundamental role in optimizing the health and safety of the patient along with maintaining high-quality standards of health and care (Vaismoradi et al., 2020). The education of nurses evolves due to the immense need for efficient nursing staff to generate positive patient outcomes and the well-being and satisfaction of the healthcare stakeholders.

The emerging technologies also make the education of nurses the most important demand of time as patients rely more on the time of their treatment nurses not only for first aid but also the record-keeping of patients, regular monitoring of vital signs, effective use of the modern healthcare machinery and effective communication of the nursing staff with the patients (Altmiller & Pepe, 2022). Effective nursing performance can create efficient outcomes for the organization, healthcare professionals, and patients. This significant role in nursing performance raises the need for nursing education and advanced nursing training programs that aim to make nurses competent enough to meet the needs of current times both from the perspective of the patient and the organization.

Influence of History Events on Nursing Education

History has played a fundamental role in the emergence of the trend of nursing education along with advanced nursing training programs to better assess the proficiency of nursing staff in generating effective patient outcomes and enhancement of quality and safety of the patients (Kavanagh & Sharpnack, 2021). With the emerging trends in healthcare systems the nursing profession is also considered the most important profession in healthcare. Through the proper education and guiding principles nursing profession will be able to expand more to compete with the current trends in technology along with the advancements in patient needs and health requirements. The five key historical influences are given below;

The Evolution of Modern Nursing with Florence Nightingale

The evolution of modern nursing during the Crimean War (1853-1857) is due to the efforts and work of Florence Nightingale (Matthews et al., 2020). She highlights the important perspective of hygiene in the nursing practice along with the emerging need for nursing staff for the treatment of patients and reducing the death rate. During the war with her abilities and skills, she becomes responsible for decreasing health disparities and increasing the number of positive patient outcomes. In 1860 a Nightingale School of Nursing was established in London to introduce the concept of evidence-based practice, advanced training, and effective communication strategies. This establishment is considered the foundation of professional nursing which transforms the career of nursing from a traditional healthcare perspective to advance nursing’s role as an important professional in the clinical facility.

The Establishment of Nursing Licensure and Regulation

Nursing licensure was established in the early 19th century to highlight the importance of the nursing profession and to comply with the need of time to make nursing more advanced and expandable from simple patient care to reducing health disparities, early recognition, and responding to deteriorating conditions and timely intervention of professionals in an emergency by regular monitoring of the health condition by the nursing staff (Zhang, 2024). The licensing sets the standards of practice and training of the nursing staff and acquires proper certification of their skills to ensure their competency in generating high-quality patient outcomes along with decreasing health disparities, the rate of hospital readmissions, and the deteriorating patient conditions.

The Development of Nursing Organizations

The development of nursing organizations including the American Nurses Association (ANA) 1896 and the International Council of Nursing (ICN) 1899 identifies the most important factors regarding advanced nursing practice like the rights of the nurses, standards of practicing, and policies to ensure effective nursing performance (Chiu et al., 2021). These organizations focus on keeping the nursing staff updated with the advancements in technology and the implementation of proper research-based approaches. These organizations are effectively keeping the standards of nursing practice high by not only focusing on the needs of the patients but also ensuring that staff satisfaction and well-being are considered.

Nursing Roles Proliferation During World Wars

World wars highlight the proficiency of nursing staff in providing health and care to patients effectively in clinical settings, ambulances, and other emergencies. Their ability to maintain a high health rate during the crisis makes it clear that the role of nurses is not only to provide care to the patients but also to maintain the effective health of the people by reducing the rate of death and increasing the rate of life (Fink & Milbrath, 2022). The efficient performance of nursing staff during the world wars makes it necessary to expand the nursing profession by introducing new nursing roles like nursing practitioners, nursing care coordinators, and so on.

The Effect of Civil Rights and Gender Equality Movements

These moments highlight the fact that nursing practices should not be discriminated against by other healthcare professionals ensuring equal rights for the nursing staff. Due to these moments, various policies were designed and implemented that promote nursing diversity and gender equality in nursing practice. This equality improves culturally competent practices in the healthcare setting helping both the patient and the nursing staff to generate positive patient experience and high-quality health outcomes.

Impact of Trends on the Future of Nursing Education

The emerging technologies are going to have a significant impact on nursing education to meet the needs of patients and healthcare providers (Gause et al., 2022). More effective practices lead to advanced positive patient outcomes and maintain high-quality standards of health and safety provided to the patients. The evolution of nursing practice in clinical settings and the extended roles of nursing staff in managing the health of the patient hold great significance in the future resulting in improved nursing performance and enhanced patient experience. The three basic trends that will impact nursing education in the future are given as follows;

Increased Integration of Healthcare Information Technology in Clinical Setting

The integration of information technology in every field of scientific healthcare makes it necessary to expand nursing practices and enhance the education of the nursing staff to effectively operate technology-based devices for the effective treatment of patients and improved patient results (Huter et al., 2020). Nursing informatics is also trending in healthcare settings due to its effective impacts on patient satisfaction, and standard of high-quality health and safety for the patients. The use of electronic health records (EHR) and the integration of telehealth services are increasing and advancing because of their effectiveness in generating better patient outcomes. This increased integration highlights the trend of evidence-based practices initiated by Florence Nightingale.

Amplification of Nursing Practice Roles

The nursing staff is an important component of all healthcare organizations due to their all rounding capabilities and responsibilities in effectively managing and monitoring patient’s conditions. The expansion in nursing roles including clinical nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, and so on is due to the effectiveness of nursing staff and clinical requirements including increasing positive patient outcomes, decreasing the cost of healthcare resources, and dealing with staff shortages (Haddad et al., 2023). This expansion was started back in the world wars when the increased participation of nursing staff helped in reducing health disparities and loss of life.

Improvement of Ethical Principles Regarding Nursing Practice

The effective consideration of nursing rights, diversity, and involvement in the decision-making process regarding the safety of the patients will create a huge impact on the future. As the nursing staff is expanding along with roles and responsibilities, the ethical rights of the nurses are also taken into consideration by the policymakers to ensure the satisfaction and well-being of the nursing staff for better healthcare outcomes and patient response (Flaubert et al., 2021). The diversity in nursing practice involves the involvement of students from various backgrounds with the validation of culturally competent healthcare services. This trend was initiated from the civil rights moments of the past and will be enhanced in the future.

NURS FPX 6103 Assessment 1 Conclusion

History represents various events that act as a cornerstone in increasing the trend of nursing and nursing education by highlighting the importance of nurses in generating positive patient outcomes providing health to the population, and reducing the cost of healthcare services. In the future, this trend will keep increasing with the most effective outcomes as nursing roles are expanded and the integration of information healthcare technologies in clinical settings (Booth et al., 2021). This integration holds great significance due to its early response and monitoring of deteriorating patient conditions and preventing harmful health events and health disparities. Nursing education is becoming the most important concern of the time due to its effectiveness.
