Urinary Analysis: Importance and Clinical Implications
BIO FPX 1000 Assessment 3 Urinary Lab Urinalysis is a medical tool for the examination of the urine which holds great significance in identifying systemic health problems including diabetes and hypertension along with the assessment of the condition of the organs, kidneys, and urinary tract (Milani & Jialal, 2023). Urinalysis provides information about the health situation of the patient which is helpful in the determination of the preventive measures and the necessary medicines that can improve the health of the patient along with ensuring positive health outcomes. This assessment will discuss the purpose and significance of urinalysis and the negative impacts of neglecting the necessary tests. This assessment will also define the type of diabetes and the management strategies for the effective results of the disease treatment. Moreover, it will also identify the reasons for the blood in the urine along with the impacts and consequences of detecting blood in urine.
Purpose and Importance of Urinary Analysis
Urinary analysis is a routine test that is helpful in the identification of various diseases by properly screening the health situation of the patient and continuously monitoring the current health condition of the patient (Zhang et al., 2022). This test is often suggested for people having various health symptoms including difficulty in urination and pain, blood in urine, systemic disease-related symptoms like diabetes and hypertension, liver or kidney dysfunction, and increased monitoring for pregnancy-related problems. Regular testing will help in the identification of health problems and ensure the timely intervention of healthcare providers for the improved health response of the patients and prevention of health problems.
Urinalysis Components
The process of urinalysis is based on three components which are given below;
- The assessment of the color, volume, and density of the urine to identify the symptoms of dehydration, infection, or other health issues.
- The increased levels of chemicals such as protein, glucose, bilirubin, and ketones help in the identification of liver dysfunction, diabetes, and other health issues.
- Identifies microorganisms and blood cells as the white blood cells or bacteria can indicate the infection.
- Detect the crystals that might represent stones in the kidney.
Clinical Significance
Urinalysis has great significance in the identification of various health issues and diseases including the detection of 220 health conditions. It helps in the identification of glucose or ketone levels in the urine as the increased levels represent the ineffective control of diabetes leading to worse health outcomes (Gosmanov et al., 2021). Early identification of the health problem leads to the intervention of the healthcare providers for the prevention of health issues. High blood pressure can cause kidney damage which produces protein in urine that can be identified through the process of urinalysis. Increased levels of protein and abnormal density indicate kidney or heart problems. Moreover, the presence of white or red blood cells, or bacteria indicates the infection of the urinary tract or other inflammatory problems.
Consequences of Neglecting Urinalysis
The delay or missed urinalysis results in various health problems leading to adverse health outcomes severely affecting the health situation of the patient (Mayo Clinic, 2023). Unpreventable or irreversible damage to the organs can occur due to the increased level of untreated kidney or diabetes. The untreated health issue can also lead to sepsis thus worsening the health situation of the patient and leading to adverse health outcomes. The delay in timely intervention of the healthcare provider for the issue of hypertension leads to kidney damage.
Diabetes and Its Types
Diabetes is a chronic health condition that is identified due to the body’s ineffective regulation and control of the blood sugar levels and it remains for a long time thus indicating a severe health problem for the patient (Sapra & Bhandari, 2023). Majorly this problem occurs due to the dysfunctioning of the insulin in the body including the insufficient insulin production by the pancreas and the inefficiency of the body in properly managing the use of the insulin it produces. Insulin is effective in its role of transporting glucose to the cells through the bloodstream to provide the required energy. The neglection of the treatment of diabetes can lead to various health issues which are listed below;
- The small blood vessels in the kidney can be damahed by high blood sugar level which ultimately impacts the kidney’s ability to filter waste appropriately.
- Increased levels of diabetes impact the blood vessels and lipid metabolism which results in the increased risk of heart problems.
- The blood vessels in the retina also get damaged due to the continuous high blood glucose levels thus resulting in diabetic retinopathy.
- A decrease in the circulation or damaged nerves leads to infections in patients having diabetes.
Types of Diabetes
There are two major types of diabetes named as type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). The destruction or damage condition of the beta cells responsible for the production of insulin in the pancreas leads to T1D which often occurs due to autoimmune reactions (Krause & Vito, 2023). The patients having T1D need therapy for the effective management of their blood sugar levels. T2D occurs due to the ineffective use of insulin by the body also known as insulin resistance. T2D occurs due to obesity, insufficient physical exercise, and family history, and it can be treated with effective changes in lifestyle, medications, and in some situations insulin therapy.
Management of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
The effective management of diabetes needs long-term approaches helpful in controlling blood sugar levels (Sugandh et al., 2023). Different strategies are applied for both types of diabetes management but majorly include medications, self-management, and effective lifestyle changes. In type 1 diabetes the body needs continuous injections of insulin or insulin pumps as the body is not producing sufficient insulin. The insulin types are chosen based on the health needs of the patients which include rapid-acting, intermediate-acting, and long-acting. Many new and advanced methods are identified which will help treat T1D like the replacement of the beta cells in the pancreas to improve the production of insulin through therapy. Moreover, gene therapy is implemented to improve the genetic cause of the problem and provide long-term health solutions to the patient.
Type 2 diabetes can be effectively managed by changing the lifestyle including a decrease in weight which is a major factor for the insulin improvement of insulin sensitivity, enhanced physical activities like walking, and swimming to lower blood glucose levels, and a healthy diabetic diet to maintain the level of glucose in the blood. Moreover, maintaining the blood pressure level will decrease the risk of diabetes associated with hypertension and prevent heart and kidney diseases and major health complications (Ahmed et al., 2024). Oral medications like metformin reduce the production of insulin in the body along with insulin therapy for the proper management of T2D and improve the health outcomes of patients having various other health complications.
Reasons for Blood in Urine
The blood in urine can be caused by various health problems which indicate the need to identify the undetected health problems leading to the worsening of the health situation of the patient (Horváth et al., 2022). The constant or prolonged hyperglycemia in diabetic patients results in damaging the kidney blood vessels which will ultimately increase the risk of complications which are given below;
- The increased level of hypoglycemia damages the filtering system of the kidneys leading to the leakage of the protein and the failure of the kidney.
- The detection of inflammation and obstruction in these areas will lead to urine in the blood also known as hematuria.
- Hyperglycemia lasting for long results in different heart issues, ulcers in limbs, and loss of vision resulting in systematic complications.
Patient Results
Anna is a 64-year-old patient who has various health issues including kidney pain, high blood pressure, and a long-lasting history of type 2 diabetes along with hypertension. The ultrasound report shows a normal wall structure of the bladder with 674 ml and 151 ml volumes of pre-void and post-void representing the emptying functional bladder. The cortical thickness of the left kidney is normal is 2.0 cm and a size of 10.2 cm. In the lower pole of the kidney, a simple 1.2 cm cyst is detected. However, the small cysts often do not cause any serious health issues but they need to be regularly monitored to prevent any kind of kidney infections and health complications including kidney failure or hypertension. Chronic conditions like hypertension or renal failure can increase the risk of elevated cysts leading to adverse health events.
