Assessment Overview
BHA FPX 4010 Assessment 3: concentrates on formulating a quantitative research question concerning retained surgical items (RSIs) and determining suitable quantitative methodologies for data collection and analysis. Quantitative research uses numbers to find patterns, connections, and results, which allows for statistical analysis to help make evidence-based decisions in healthcare.

Quantitative Research Questions and Methods
Part 1: Quantitative Research Question
Given the rising number of retained surgical errors even when proper timeout protocols and safety procedures are followed, what factors are responsible for this increase, which has gone from 1,500 to 4,000 to 6,000 surgical cases per year?
Part 2: Quantitative Methods and Data Collection
Quantitative research utilizes deductive reasoning to investigate social phenomena or research inquiries, producing numerical data for statistical analysis (Bhat, 2018). This method makes it easier to measure problems and helps policymakers make decisions based on large-scale data collection efforts (Allen, 2017). Voting polls and United States Census reports are two examples (Allen, 2017). Descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental, and experimental research are four common quantitative methods (Lucas-Alfieri, 2018).
Descriptive research offers insights into natural phenomena without interference, employing methodologies such as observational and survey research (Bhat, 2018; Ellis-Jacobs, 2018). Correlational research examines the relationships among variables via statistical analysis (Bhat, 2018). Quasi-experimental research seeks to identify causal relationships in the absence of random assignment (Alsaggaf et al., 2018). Experimental research changes variables to find out what causes something (Bhat, 2018).
Quantitative research data collection methods include interviews, questionnaires, and surveys (Andersen & Walter, 2016). Face-to-face interviews build rapport, but they can take a long time (Valdez, 2019). Surveys are a good way to get information from a lot of people quickly, but they might not be very detailed (Mander, 2017). Whether sent by mail or online, questionnaires measure what people think and do (Valdez, 2019).
Targeted Data
Targeted data collection concentrates on pertinent quantitative indicators to tackle research inquiries while omitting superfluous information (Allen, 2017). To examine the influence of appropriate surgical timeout protocols on retained surgical instruments, data collection will encompass in-person interviews and postoperative questionnaires. The research process will be guided by openness and a focus on patient safety.

Step-by-Step Guide
- Develop Research Question—Identify a quantifiable issue, such as the factors leading to retained surgical items despite adherence to appropriate timeout protocols.
- Choose a Quantitative Methodology: Depending on the goals of the study, pick descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental, or experimental research.
- Plan Data Collection: Choose tools like surveys, questionnaires, or interviews to get numbers.
- Target Relevant Data—Look for data that directly answers the research question, such as rates of incidents or compliance with procedures.
- Make sure that data collection is safe for patients and follows ethical standards.
- Use statistical methods to look at the data and find patterns or connections.
- Draw Conclusions – Connect the results to the research question and their effects on lowering RSIs.
