Leadership Styles Application

High-quality patient care and better outcomes, proper management of healthcare resources, and the well-being of the staff members are the major objectives of all healthcare organizations and this can only be achieved through effective leadership strategies (Restivo et al., 2022). Efficient leadership strategies ensure that the team follows the instructions and actively responds to the decisions. Successful leadership strategies increase the awareness and self-motivation n the workers and improve the performance of the overall organization.

Different leadership style classifications are applicable in different healthcare conditions management and administration whereas there is no specific standard leadership style for the health systems because of the changing conditions of the workplaces (Restivo et al., 2022). This assessment will focus on the leadership styles needed for a case study scenario regarding managerial challenges. The case study reflects a sleeping-on-the-job scenario of the employee and considers the most effective leadership style that can help in efficiently and proficiently dealing with this situation and identifying the positive and negative implications of the leadership styles in that particular situation.

Major Tenets Of Leadership Styles

The leadership styles that can help manage the employee situation regarding sleeping on the job issue in healthcare organizations can be democratic style, transformational style, and autocratic style (Thawabiya et al., 2023). These leadership styles have their significance and benefits and can help the organization in various ways. An efficient leadership style can help maintain a sustainable environment in the workplace along with the well-being of each working staff.

The sleeping on-job situation needs an authoritative leadership style that makes sure that staff do not relax on certain rules like timeliness, activeness in the workplace, and efficient performance (Shan et al., 2022). The transformational style helps in understanding the employee situation and provides motivation to employees for a better change and the democratic style involves the other team members in an efficient decision-making process.

Essential Characteristics Of Leadership Styles

The different leadership styles have different characteristics that are all valuable in maintaining a sustainable and proficient environment of the workplace along with ensuring improvements in the worker’s motivation to perform efficiently for better patient outcomes (Palweni et al., 2023). The few essential characteristics of the leadership styles including transformational, autocratic, and democratic needed for the case study scenario are given below,

Transformational Leadership Style

Transformational leadership style is about communicating with the employees about their concerns and issues and motivating them to be better in their work by changing their behavior toward health outcomes and patient safety (Thawabiya et al., 2023). In a case study scenario, this style can help the employee to understand the lackings and build the potential to enhance their commitment to work. The leader can provide support to the employee by providing counseling regarding work-life balancing or resources that can help in improving their performance at work.

Autocratic Leadership Style

This leadership style represents the authoritative nature regarding the implementation of rules and strict actions against rule-breaking. Authoritarian monitoring of the staff and controlling all the power regarding decision-making and policy implementation (Shan et al., 2022). In a case study scenario, this style might lead to severe warnings and even the chances of termination also exist to ensure the effectiveness of the rules. The leader can also organize the team so that the work efficiency is increased by the collaboration of the team members.

Democratic Leadership Style

Democratic leaders focus more on the involvement of team members in the decision-making process and they are welcoming towards advice from managers and other leaders. They help the staff and the managers achieve goals effectively and efficiently by providing information regarding their needs (Romi et al., 2022). In the case study scenario, the leader might involve the team and the employee to understand the reason behind the issue and collaborative decision for the problem resolution.

Effectiveness of Leadership Styles

Leadership styles are always effective in dealing with various healthcare problems regarding employee behavior working abilities resource maintenance and patient outcomes (Gashaye et al., 2023). A few elements of the effectiveness of democratic, autocratic, and transformational leadership styles concerning the case study are given below;

 Strong Employee-Leader Relationship

Leadership styles are effective in building strong relationships between employees and the leaders by understanding and communicating with the employees regarding their issues providing support and developing strategies to help the employees improve their work performance.

 Accomplishment of Organizational Goals

Leader style classification helps in understanding and implementing various strategies for different healthcare issues and concerns faced by an organization (Samarakoon, 2019). They help in improving patient responses by effectively monitoring the healthcare team and other staff members.

 Optimization of Resources

Proper allocation and management of resources are very important especially in healthcare organizations as in case of emergencies these resources will be useful to effectively save the lives of the patients and to reduce disparities.

 Improving Healthcare Outcomes

Proper and efficient management of team and staff members motivates the workers to perform efficiently in providing healthcare to the patients. Thus improved healthcare and on-time treatment help to improve patient outcomes.

Evaluation Criteria

The effectiveness of the leadership style can be evaluated through positive patient outcomes and the increased work efficiency and productivity of the staff (Samarakoon, 2019). The sustainable development of the healthcare organization and the increased well-being and satisfaction of employees can also be used to evaluate the effectiveness of leadership styles. Moreover, the improved environment of the workplace and strong adherence to rules and regulations are also used as evaluation criteria.

Positive Implications of the Leadership Styles

All leadership styles have their benefits and disadvantages when implementing them in particular healthcare situations related to the staff. In the case of the study scenario, the democratic leadership style creates an impression of being considered and involved in improving the situation regarding sleeping on the job (Olatoye et al., 2024). It increases team collaboration and enhances a positive workplace environment. It will allow the employee with the problem to focus on new ways and ideas that can efficiently help in resolving the issue. Transformational leadership style will help the employee in making changes in the behavior related to the problem and implement a long-lasting improvement strategy by understanding and eliminating the root purpose of the problem.

It will provide and facilitate the employee with supportive strategies using workshops and positive discussions that will help the employee in improving performance and working sufficiently for better outcomes. Once the work efficiency improves the confidence of the employee regarding issue handling will be improved thus improving the organizational goals (Gavya & Subashini, 2024). The autocratic style strictly monitors the employees and ensures the order of an organization must be maintained. It gives an impression that all are equal and no rule-breaking will be acceptable to anyone.

Negative Implications Of the Leadership Styles

Along with all the positive implications the leadership style also has some negative implications on the employees that will eventually create negative outcomes for the healthcare organization (Pattali et al., 2024). In the case study scenario, the autocratic leadership style can not be able to identify the root purpose of the problem and neglects the employee situation which will create a negative impact on the employee. The well-being and satisfaction of employees are always the priority of healthcare organizations for better patient outcomes but with an autocratic style, it will be unachievable (Durowade et al., 2020). The democratic style will also impact negatively the team members by giving the sense of being too polite with the employee breaking the rules and that will create incorporation between the team members.

The workload of that particular employee on the other team members will also impact them badly and they will try to use methods to reduce the workload that will affect the organization negatively. The transformational style needs time to implement the solution regarding employee problems and that time can create tension between the other workers as they are dealing with an extensive workload and they will need immediate solutions to the problem for their better performance (Khan & Tidman, 2021). The benefit of this approach greatly depends on the employee as they need to make changes according to suggested solutions.

NURS FPX 5007 Assessment 1 Conclusion

Leadership styles and strategies are the most important factors for the improvement of the performance of healthcare workers, better patient outcomes, proper maintenance and optimization of resources, and enhanced organizational goals (Murray & Cope, 2021). Various leadership styles are applicable in various settings according to different classifications of the existing problems. In the case study scenario of sleeping on the job (a managerial challenge), three leadership styles will effectively control and manage the situation democratic, autocratic, and transformational. All the leadership styles are effective in controlling the rule-breaking situation, enhancing the leader and employee relations by addressing problems and transparent communication, and providing supportive ideas and strategies to help the employee change behavior and improve performance. However, despite the positive impacts on the employees and the organization these leadership styles also have some negative implications.
